I attended a very interesting press lunch yesterday which had LOOK Magazine editor-in-chief Melanie Cuevas and the British Council’s Amanda Burrell announce wonderful news about their 2nd year of “collaboration” for the LOOK of Style Awards– in search of the next talented young fashion designer in the Philippines!
What’s in store for the Winner?
- The winner of the LOOK of Style Awards will be presented with an all- expense paid trip to the United Kingdom…
- … where he/ she will have the opportunity to enroll in a short course of his/her choice in London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins!
- The winner also gets to receive business mentoring from fashion industry pros in areas like business planning and marketing…

According to Ana Tan, program and PR manager of the British Council of the Philippines, “The LOOK of Style Awards is actually a way for us to collaborate with artists from the Philippines and the UK using an arts area we both are strong at– fashion.” LOOK Editor Mel Cuevas adds “… this project is one way of helping young designers hone their craft and further their career in fashion. With the support of… the British Council of the Philippines, we plan to make this a continuous effort.”
How does one apply for this competition?
- Applicant must have an established primary design business in the Philippines.
- S/he must have a minimum of 2 consecutive years in design experience (must have garnered substantial + recent editorial coverage and have professional staff that can devote time & effort required to accomplish the stated aims of an applicant’s design career plans)
All applicants will be required to present actual samples of their clothes, a portfolio of their work to a screening committee which consists of LOOK magazine editors and fashion industry experts. They will then narrow field down to 10 finalists.
If included in the final 10:
- Each finalist will be asked to provide specific information about their short and long- term business goals and objectives as well as how winning the award and business mentoring will enable them to pursue their design career plans and existing business.
- Finalists will also be required to submit a porfolio presentation containing work from previous collections (may include sketches, photos, editorial features).
- Each finalist must also submit 3- 5 references (editors, retailers, or other fashion industry professionals with whom they have/ have had a close working relationship) that the fashion council can contact for comments/ opinions
- These 10 candidates will undergo an interview and presentation of 5 looks from past, present, and upcoming collections to the panel based on a given theme:
- With science and technology becoming part of everyone’s lifestyle, the given theme for this year’s LOOK of Style Awards is “STYLISH TECH”. The given theme will challenge finalists to make use of innovative techniques and fabrication and translate them into wearable pieces of art
- The interview will also include an assessment of the business mentoring needs of each of the candidates.
A panel of judges will rate the Finalists’ works and select an overall winner based on:
- Construction technique
- Design skill and interpretation of theme
- Overall presentation and visual impact
- Design marketability
The LOOK of Style Awards winner will be announced in a party/ fashion show this October 2011! 🙂 The fashion show will include segments from the finalists as well as from LOOK’s guest British designer (I am excited to see who’s coming for this :D).
